Lennox Mini Split Heat Pump vs. Electric Heater: What the Cost Spreadsheets Taught Me

So the installed numbers were $3,750 for the electric heaters versus $5,900 for the Lennox. The heater was still cheaper, but the gap had shrunk from $2,450 on paper to $2,150 installed. Thermostat and Wiring: The Part That Confuses Everyone

For a heat pump, you're usually working with low-voltage wires:

  • G for the indoor fan

If you're replacing an old thermostat with a Lennox-compatible one, matching those letters to the old wiring is usually straightforward. But if you're installing a line-voltage thermostat for a 240V electric heater, you have to break the circuit at the breaker or disconnect. That's not a beginner project, and in commercial buildings it often needs a permit.

Bottom line: the electric heaters ended up needing more electrical work than I expected, not less. The wiring surprise changed the cost equation more than the units themselves.

Electric Snow Blower Rule: Performance in the Worst Case

I ran into the same cost logic when I bought an electric snow blower for the shop in 2023. The price tag was low. The first time we tried to clear wet, heavy snow from the parking lot, the cord and the motor weren't up to it. The upfront savings didn't fix the performance problem, and I ended up eating a restocking fee.

Here's where I'll take a side. Quality is not just a spec sheet; it's the client's first impression of your work.

When we left temporary electric heaters at a previous job, the client called them 'noisy boxes' and complained about temperature swings. When we installed the Lennox mini split heat pump, the same client said the space felt comfortable and quiet. The extra $2,150 in capital cost translated into a reference call and two referral jobs.

I'm not saying electric heaters are always the wrong call. I am saying the cheapest option can become the most expensive one when it hurts your reputation.

Warranty: Verify, Don't Assume

Lennox sells reliability, and the warranty is part of that story. I always verify the model and serial number before discussing a '10-year compressor warranty.' In commercial settings, labor warranty is often a separate line item. I don't count it as a saving until I see it in writing. A verbal promise at the counter is a red flag to me.

Even after I approved the Lennox order, I kept second-guessing the extra cost. What if the inverter compressor failed during the first winter? The two weeks between the order and start-up were stressful. I relaxed when the unit held setpoint for a full day without a service call.

What I'd Choose Now

If the space is small, used a few hours a week, and cooling doesn't matter, an electric heater can make sense. The math can work, and I'd sign that recommendation.

If the space is used daily, heating and cooling both matter, and you care about how your work is perceived, the Lennox mini split heat pump is hard to beat. It wasn't the cheapest option, and I won't pretend it was. But across installed cost, operating cost, wiring, filters, and referrals, it was the better purchase for this job.

Bottom line: compare the full lifecycle cost, not the sticker price. Take my word for it, or better yet, build your own spreadsheet. Just include the parts that don't show up on the first page of a quote.
